Spring is almost here, and that means road trip season is just around the corner! Whether planning a weekend getaway or a cross-country adventure, ensuring your car is in top shape is key to a safe and stress-free trip. At MotorAbility, we’ve put together some essential spring car maintenance tips to help you get road-ready.
1. Check Your Tires
Your car’s tires are its only contact with the road, so they need to be in great shape.
- Tread Depth – Make sure your tire tread isn’t too worn down. Use the penny test—if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires.
- Tire Pressure – Cold weather can cause your tire pressure to drop. Adjust it to the manufacturer’s recommended level for better fuel efficiency and handling.
- Alignment & Balancing – If your car pulls to one side or your steering wheel vibrates, an alignment check is a good idea.
2. Test Your Battery
Winter can be tough on your battery, and a weak one might leave you stranded. Have it tested to ensure it’s holding a charge. If your battery is over three years old or you’re noticing slow starts, consider replacing it before your trip.
3. Inspect Your Brakes
Reliable brakes are essential for safe road trips. If you hear squeaking, grinding, or feel a soft brake pedal, your brake pads or rotors may need attention. A quick inspection can prevent bigger (and more expensive) problems down the road.
4. Replace Wipers & Top Off Fluids
Spring showers mean you’ll need clear visibility, so swap out old, streaky wiper blades for a new set. Also, check and top off important fluids, including:
- Oil & Coolant – Prevent engine overheating and keep things running smoothly.
- Brake Fluid – Crucial for responsive braking.
- Windshield Washer Fluid – A must-have for keeping your windshield clean on long drives.
5. Give It a Spring Cleaning
A clean car makes for a better driving experience! Wash off winter salt and dirt to protect your paint and vacuum the interior to clear out dust, debris, and salt. Don’t forget to clean your headlights and taillights for better visibility.
Save This Checklist!
To make things even easier, we’ve created a Spring Car Maintenance Checklist that you can save to your phone or print out. Use it as a quick guide before your next road trip!
